Horse racing has not been immune to the COVID-19 crisis. The majority of tracks in the US were shut down, including renowned racetracks like Churchill Downs, Santa Anita and Belmont Park. As they reopened in mid-May and June for Belmont Park and the Belmont Stakes, fans have been able to enjoy watching and wagering on horse racing.
That included the added prep series races for the Kentucky Derbythat concluded on Sept. 5 with Authentic (8/1) winning wire-to-wire over the prohibitive favorite Tiz the Law (3/5).

The final leg of the 2020 Triple Crown is Oct. 3 at Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes on Oct. 3.
Major venues at Saratoga and Del Mar concluded their summer meets on Labor Day. But Belmont Park (Sept. 18 – Nov. 1) and Santa Anita (Sept. 25 – Oct. 25) continue their fall meets through October. The Belmont fall meet will include 22 graded stakes races and seven “Win and You’re In” qualifiers to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships to be held Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland. Santa Anita has six Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races on Sept. 26-27. Keeneland will run nine Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” events during its fall meet Oct. 2-24 ahead of hosting the Breeders’ Cup Nov. 6-7.

Open horse racing tracks in the US today
Belmont Park (Thursday – Sunday)
Historic Belmont Park opened in 1905 and is located 14 miles East of New York in Elmont, NY. The track hosts some of the finest events in North American horse racing including the Belmont Stakes, which was the first leg of the 2020 Triple Crown for the first time ever June 20.
The 27-day Belmont Fall Meet runs from Sept. 18 through Nov. 1 and features seven “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series races with five of them on Saturday, Oct. 11. A total 38 stakes worth $5.58 million in purse money will be run during the fall meet.
Belmont Park is one of three race tracks on the NYRA racing circuit. The track reopened for racing June 3 during the Covid-19 health crisis with no spectators allowed and strict protocols in place by the New York Racing Association and state health officials.
Belmont’s main track is known as “Big Sandy” among fans and features a long stretch to the finish line. It’s comprised of a 1 1/2 mile dirt oval – the longest dirt Thoroughbred track in North America. The main track features a Widener Turf Course which surrounds an Inner Turf course with sharper turns and longer distance races.
Thanks to the chutes and their straight away expansions to the ovals, the Belmont Park tracks also feature varying race distances. These chutes allow the running of longer distance races with horses going round in one turn, which was the case for the shortened 1 1/8 mile Belmont Stakes in 2020. This single turn ensures balance and reduces the chances of a horse being forced outside to run for much longer.
The New York Islanders (NHL) will open Belmont Arena in 2021 next to Belmont Park with sports betting and horse racing drawing more fans as legalization gains traction in New York.

Gulfstream Park (Thursday – Sunday)
Gulfstream Park is located in Hallandale Beach Florida, 17 miles North of Miami. Live Thoroughbred racing takes place at Gulfstream Park from Thursday through Sunday during the Spring-Summer meet which runs April through September. Premium stakes days are on four Saturdays – Aug. 1 and 29, and Sept. 5 and 26. The race schedule consists of 10-12 races that include Claiming, Maiden, Allowance Optional Claiming and Stakes races with purses mostly less than $40,000. The majority of field sizes are 8-12 horses and first post time is 12:45 p.m. ET.
The Championship Meet starts in late November and runs through March with racing Wednesday through Sunday. Nearly 40 graded stakes make the Championship Meet one of the best in the country headlined by the Pegasus World Cup at the end of January and the Florida Derby on the final weekend of March. Track announcer Pete Aiello is one of the best in racing.
Gulfstream Park, led by the powerful Stronach Group, took a stand to continue horse racing during the COVID-19 health crisis despite an executive order from Broward County to close all non-essential businesses. The racing facility is closed to spectators during COVID-19 until further notice. However, there is a free live stream at the Gulfstream Park website and TVG.

Santa Anita Park (Thursday – Sunday)
Santa Anita Park, knows as The Great Race Place, is recognized as one of the country’s premier racetracks. It is located 18 miles NE of Los Angeles, in Arcadia, CA with the beautiful and majestic backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. The track offers year-round racing thanks to favorable weather and continued support. Santa Anita Park has lush, manicured green lawns, colorful gardens and historically significant architecture.
The 2020 autumn meet will run without fans in the stands from Sept. 25 through Oct. 25. There will be 26 stakes races including seven “Win and You’re In” Breeders’ Cup Challange Series races on Sept. 26-27.
Santa Anita Park is operated by the Stronach Group. Santa Anita houses three tracks – a mile long dirt track, a 9/10 of a mile long turf course and a 6 ½ furlongs long hillside turf course, which since 2019 only runs races at 5-6 furlongs.

US horse racing has been hit by one of its biggest ever scandals after 27 people, including the trainer of one of the world's best racehorses, were arrested for allegedly drugging thoroughbreds.
The multi-billion dollar US racing industry has long been dogged by accusations of doping to improve performance and distorting betting odds.
Among the trainers, vets and drugs distributors arrested is Jason Servis, trainer of Maximum Security, who last month won the $20m Saudi Cup, the world's richest horse race. He also appeared to have won the 2019 Kentucky Derby, before being disqualified for interference.
Servis is accused of doping Maximum Security and 'virtually all of the racehorses under his control' according to the four indictments. Servis entered horses in some 1,082 races between 2018 and last month, while another arrested trainer, Jorge Navarro, entered horses in 1,480 races over that time.
Prosecutors claim horses were secretly given adulterated performance enhancing drugs including blood builders, pain shots, bronchodilators and 'red acid' to boost performance.
William Sweeney Jr, assistant director-in-charge of the FBI's New York office said: 'These substances stimulated endurance, deadened nerves, increased oxygen intake, and reduced inflammation.
'What actually happened to the horses amounted to nothing less than abuse. They experienced cardiac issues, over-exertion leading to leg fractures, increased risk of injury, and in some cases death.

'Conversely, the human beings involved in this scheme continued to line their purses as they manipulated this multi-billion dollar horse racing industry across the globe.
'People are rightfully disturbed by the mistreatment of animals who have absolutely no means of defence.'
The 27 defendants are accused of involvement in one or more drug alteration and misbranding conspiracies to deceive regulators, racing officials and the betting public, with each charge carrying a maximum five-year prison term.

Two defendants also face smuggling or obstruction charges, each with a maximum 20-year prison term.
